The Children are divided into 2 broad groups:
The Nido – Creche/Baby Room (Age 3 months – 2 years)
We admit babies from 3 months and we provide them with a nurturing environment where they are cared for, loved and nurtured. We believe very much in communication to encourage speech. To this end, we use a lot of appropriate music and magic words to help the children.
We are open from 7am throughout the year excluding weekends, public holidays and Christmas vacation. Our experienced caregivers support and encourage the babies to move towards independence using a variety of techniques and authentic Montessori materials.
The aim here is to stimulate the senses daily through direct attention within a prepared and thoughtfully structured prepared environment with the freedom to explore. Furthermore we believe children thrive in a home away from home environment with enough freedom for exploration. We work with strict UNESCO/UNICEF ratios on key caregiver to child all through our school. Our friendly school nurse is always on hand to assist and give advice as well. We set out to nurture confidence, curiosity and creativity to lay foundation for self-discovery and learning.
The Infant Community
Infants from 2years – 3years
Children here are expected to be fully potty trained or at least moving towards it. We open from 7am – 1:30pm and the children are expected to be 2 by 30th September at the year of entry, although children are accepted all year round within the following terms;
- Michelmas term – September – December
- Lent/Hilary term – January – March/April
- Trinity term – April – July
We are aware that the first years of a child’s life are absolutely crucial to later development so having this as fore- knowledge we aim to assist the children through the development and refining of their senses to learn and understand. Multi-sensory equipment and activities are used to stimulate the mind and enable them reach their potential. Great emphasis is placed on the Montessori Method, aspects of the Nigerian Curriculum and the Early Years Foundation Stage EYFS British Curriculum. We also employ Jolly Phonics to teach language in a reading area with mini arm chairs and couches. We have a beautiful outdoor play area which is used with the slightly older children in accordance with the Montessori ethos. The school garden allows the opportunity to appreciate nature at close quarters.
We are mindful of the socio cultural norms and practices in our environment and as such the grace and courtesy activities reflect this. Every morning we have morning prayers and after outdoor play, circle time is eagerly anticipated by all the children! The children discover their personalities, cooperate with each other and cherish each other’s company irrespective of any differences. They are encouraged to move at their own pace and are introduced to new subjects and experiences as and when observed to be ready. Ample support is provided to ensure the children ‘have a go’ at every activity presented with lots of fun and laughter along the way.
The children in this class are ages 3-4 years old. They are formally introduced to the prepared Montessori Environment. IN this class, they are expected to be quite independent and capable of clear speech, however we can direct parents to certified speech pathologist. The children are introduced to the 5 main Montessori areas – Practical Life, Sensorial, Mathematics, Language and culture. The children also have music and French classes. Please note that our children do not write exams at this stage and neither do they cram knowledge. They are expected to discover and bloom at their own pace. We are not unmindful of expected developmental milestones however we are not restricted by them. In Montessori settings children write before they read and our setting in this regard is not an exception. However usually our children are able to read quite well by the time they are leaving this class.
We have a wide range of activities available for after school clubs for example – ballet, taekwondo, French etc.
Lunch is also available termly for a fee. The ingredients are organic and highly nutritious.
